Nascido em Baguim do Monte, José Carvalho ou Zé Carvalho – como é conhecido – trabalhou na construção civil e foi taxista mas é pelo fado que é reconhecido. Não é um fado comum. É o fado com humor. Tem até à data três gravações e diz que se sente “um tanto ou quanto regozijado” porque a população de Baguim do Monte “o respeita muito”. Já os The Dixie Boys andam na estrada desde 1994. A banda de rockabilly dos anos 50 já teve várias formações mas, segundo Rui Ferreira, compositor e contrabaixo, esta é a “melhor formação” da banda. Os The Dixie Boys contam com quatro álbuns editados e atualmente ensaiam na casa do vocalista Ricardo Prazeres, em Valbom. O Vivacidade esteve à conversa com três dos quatro membros do grupo.
Entrevista a Zé Carvalho:
Quando é que o fado entrou para a sua vida?
Comecei a brincar no Largo de S. Brás, quando se faziam festas e cortejos para o Centro Paroquial. Participei em várias, inclusivamente, vestido de palhaço em festas para crianças. E numa dessas festas houve um senhor que me disse: “Quero contratá-lo para o dia 4 de novembro [de 1978] porque vou inaugurar um restaurante em S. Pedro da Cova.” Eu disse que estava a cantar mas não era fadista. Esse foi o meu primeiro espetáculo. Depois, pensava que não ia continuar mas a malta começou a puxar por mim e então dediquei-me um bocadinho e continuei.
Foi a voz ou o humor que o ajudaram a lançar a carreira?
Foi a voz, porque comecei com um reportório do Neca Rafael e a minha voz parecia-se com a dele. E havia uma certa parecença na voz. Mas foi um pouco de tudo, o humor também e continuei sempre com esse tipo de fado.
Porquê o fado humorístico?
Já gostava da pessoa que, naquele tempo, comecei a imitar. Dava-lhe um valor fora de série e ganhei mais tarde minimamente um pouco desse valor.
Nunca considerou o fado como um estilo de música triste?
Nos anos 60 e 70 chamávamos o ‘fado da desgraçadinha’ mas agora não. Há fados bonitos. Temos autores portuenses com fados lindos.
Considera-se uma figura nacional, com um estilo próprio definido?
Sim. Quem é que não tem um bocadinho de vaidade naquilo que está a fazer? Sinto alguma responsabilidade porque normalmente sou o artista principal convidado e nos dois primeiros fados ainda vou a tremer.
Mesmo depois de todos estes anos ainda se sente nervoso?
Sinto, é o sentido de responsabilidade.
Sente também a responsabilidade de fazer rir o seu público?
Sim, também gozo isso. O pessoal precisa de se rir.

Everything said was very logical. But, what about this?
what if you wrote a catchier title? I am not saying your
content isn’t solid, but suppose you added a title that grabbed people’s
attention? I mean Do fado ao rockabilly com raízes em Gondomar –
Vivacidade is kinda vanilla. You might peek at Yahoo’s front page and watch how they create
article headlines to get people to open the links. You might try adding a video or
a related picture or two to grab people excited about what you’ve got to say.
Just my opinion, it might make your website a little livelier.
Its like you read my mind! You appear to understand a lot about this, such as
you wrote the ebook in it or something. I think that you can do with
a few percent to pressure the message home a little bit, but instead
of that, that is wonderful blog. An excellent read.

layout of your site? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better.
Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or
2 images. Maybe you could space it out better?
