A 31 de agosto de 2013, Marco Martins, presidente da Câmara Municipal de Gondomar [na altura candidato à presidência do Município] apresentava um projeto de reconversão e revitalização do Mercado da Areosa. Os comerciantes locais reivindicam agora, com urgência, a concretização desse projeto para atrair clientes para uma zona comercial que consideram estar “desertificada”.
O projeto de campanha eleitoral de Marco Martins visa, entre outras coisas, a conclusão do palco e respetivas infraestruturas adjacentes ao atual Mercado da Areosa, bem como a colocação de espaços de venda exterior numa praça central coberta. No rés-do-chão está prevista a instalação de uma esquadra da PSP e a criação de uma tarifa de estacionamento exclusiva para clientes. O autarca assumiu que o projeto seria executado em 2014, com um custo global de cerca de 150 mil euros, mas deparou-se, a 26 de agosto de 2013, com uma sentença judicial na qual o Município de Gondomar teria que pagar à Opção Sublime [empresa concessionária do estacionamento] 4,6 milhões de euros. Mais tarde, houve uma negociação com a empresa e a autarquia conseguiu poupar 1,2 milhões de euros, ficando a dever cerca de 3,5 milhões. As Grandes Opções do Plano e Orçamento Municipais para 2014 incluíam a requalificação do mercado mas, até agora, nada foi feito. Ao Vivacidade, Marco Martins explicou que o projeto está “em fase final de conclusão” e que será apresentado “mal seja possível”.
Entretanto, na rua Heróis da Pátria, os comerciantes falam numa “desertificação” da zona desde a construção do novo Mercado da Areosa, que não agradou à população residente.
