Ricardo Couto, 22 anos, é licenciado em jornalismo e mestrando de Fotografia e Cinema Documental na Escola Superior de Música, Artes e Espetáculo (ESMAE), formação que o levou a conquistar o Prémio Sophia Estudante, da Academia Portuguesa de Cinema, na categoria Melhor Documentário com a curta metragem “Terra Mãe”. O filme documental retrata o dia a dia de uma família transmontana em Boticas, Vila Real.
Quando é que surge a tua paixão pela sétima arte?
Eu passei de cinéfilo a cineasta. O cinema foi uma opção natural a partir do momento em que comecei a procurar as minhas referências. Comecei como espectador e acho que devemos começar mesmo assim.
A opção de seguires cinema documental surgiu com naturalidade?
Quando sai de jornalismo quis dar resposta à minha criatividade. Tive sempre a necessidade de ser autor de projetos e ao inscrever-me no mestrado tive uma resposta institucional para o que eu queria fazer. A minha intenção inicial era fazer ficção e concorri ao mestrado nessa componente mas acabei por obter admissão na parte documental, graças à minha carta de motivação onde eu falava muito da tentativa de libertação da objetividade do jornalismo. Eu queria explorar as histórias das pessoas numa perspetiva mais poética.
E é no Mestrado em Fotografia e Cinema Documental da ESMAE que surge este documentário…
Sim, este é um exercício de residência artística que nos permite fazer um filme de curta metragem documental. Numa primeira fase a equipa foi para o terreno procurar uma história em Boticas, Vila Real, e dessa forma chegamos ao contacto com uma família local. Batemos à porta dessa família, entramos na casa deles e fizemos este documentário. A família é composta por três gerações e naquela casa conseguimos ter todas as histórias que procurávamos: a ligação à terra, a vida quotidiana e a identidade que passa de geração em geração.
É nesse sentido que escolhem o título “Terra Mãe”?
No fundo o título do filme espelha aquilo que ele retrata. “Terra” pela ligação da família à agricultura e pecuária, “Mãe” pelas ligações familiares e porque as mulheres são os alicerces daquela família. São as duas dimensões maiores do filme.
Quanto tempo demorou a realizar este documentário?
O filme ficou pronto em julho e começou a ser filmado na primeira semana de maio. Antes disso houve uma fase de preparação que teve início em março. A primeira exibição do filme foi em Boticas para a população local.
O que vos levou a candidatar o filme a festivais e prémios de cinema?
Achamos pertinente candidatar o filme a alguns prémios e festivais porque tivemos uma crítica muito positiva dos nossos professores e espectadores. Concorremos ao festival Mostrarte um pouco às cegas e quando vimos os outros filmes achamos que não tínhamos hipótese. No entanto, nesse concurso ganhamos três prémios e foi muito bom para nós.
Seguiu-se a candidatura aos prémios Sofia…
O prémio Sofia foi logo a seguir. Estava a meio de uma apresentação quando soube que tínhamos sido nomeados. O filme passou no Centro Cultural de Belém e foi a melhor projeção que tivemos até hoje. No momento em que soubemos da atribuição do prémio foi um sentimento fantástico.
Esse prémio classifica-vos para a fase final dos Prémio Sofia Estudante 2016. O que esperam alcançar no dia 13 de maio (data da atribuição)?
Vamos estar em Lisboa e vamos ter a oportunidade de estar perto de algumas das personalidades do cinema português que mais admiramos. Não sei se vamos ganhar. Não sei até que ponto um documentário poético e reflexivo poderá ganhar mas só por estar nomeado para o Prémio Sophia Estudante 2016 já é uma grande conquista.
Entretanto o filme continua a ser exibido com regularidade…
Continua a ser exibido e isso deixa-nos muito contentes. Neste momento estamos a candidatar-nos a vários festivais.
Em termos individuais o que podemos esperar de ti nos próximos tempos?
Estou neste momento em pré-produção do meu segundo filme. O filme vai retratar a minha relação pessoal com o 25 de Abril, sendo que eu nasci 20 anos depois do 25 de Abril (risos).
Será um trabalho mais pessoal…
Nesse aspeto sim. O documentário “Terra Mãe” foi um exercício de grupo e este próximo filme será feito por mim, apesar de contar sempre com o apoio dos meus colegas.
Sendo gondomarense gostarias de contar histórias da tua terra?
Sem dúvida. A maneira mais correta de fazer cinema é sermos honestos com o que somos e com o que pensamos. Eu não consigo viver sem Gondomar e sem Valbom. Nasci aqui e é o sítio para onde venho no final do dia. Vejo uma necessidade cultural muito grande nos gondomarenses e julgo que o que existe atualmente não corresponde ao nosso potencial. Gostava que a Câmara de Gondomar pudesse olhar para o cinema documental de uma forma mais séria e gostava de apresentar o cinema às escolas do concelho.
